In terms of population, India is the second largest country in the world, but the sad truth is that more than five lakh people in India die every year because of non-availability of essential organs such as liver, heart, kidney and even eyes. A very small amount of 1000 deceased received the required organs every year. The rest who fail to get an organ has no other option but to die to wait for an organ.
To understand the organ donation and to promote the awareness of the same, the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Daredevils (DD) on Wednesday joined their official media Healthcare partner Fortis Healthcare to raise awareness about the cause of Cadaver Organ Donation.
Former captain and opening batsman Gautam Gambhir, who was present along with other team members and team officials, said: “I want to request everyone to become an organ donor. I myself am an organ donor. The ability to help someone live a better life — there is no better feeling than this.

“Organ donation reflects humanity’s capability to give another life after we have lived our own. It is an initiative which is very close to my heart and I urge everyone to become an organ donor. I am happy to be a part of Fortis ‘More to Give’ initiative.”
Other guests included Dr. Avnish Seth, Director, Fortis Organ Retrieval and Transplant (FORT), Dr. Samir Parikh, Director, Department of Behavioural Sciences and Mental Health, Fortis Memorial Research Institute and Col. Harinder Chehal, COO – NCR Region, Fortis Healthcare.
The highlight of the event was a sports psychology team engagement exercise conducted by Dr. Parikh and the Fortis mental health team with the players.
Gambhir recently stepped down as Delhi’s skipper in order to turn their fortunes around. He also benched himself after making way for Shreyas Iyer to take over as the captaincy role for the betterment of the team. But, nothing went in the franchise’s way since then. The Daredevils are currently standing at the bottom of the table with just 6 points from 10 games. They have won only three games and lost seven so far in the tournament.
DD has four more games left under their belt against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI). It’s very tough for the Delhi team to make it to the top four given the opponents in their upcoming games.
