During the 21st match of the 11th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at Jaipur, Rajasthan Royals’ Jofra Archer commenced his IPL career in style. Having missed some matches due to injury, Archer registered a fruitful IPL debut.
Rohit Sharma, captain of Mumbai Indians, won the toss and chose to bat. After losing Evin Lewis (0) in the first over, Mumbai Indians were bolstered by a 129-run stand between Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan. That being said, the Indians lost a flurry of wickets to finish their innings in a below-par manner.
Archer, who had impressed one and all in the Big Bash League earlier this year, proved as to why he was one of the most sought-after players in the auction. Bowling first change in the innings, Archer bowled for the first time in the IPL in the fourth over of the Indians’ innings.
He finishes with bowling figures of 4-0-22-3. All his three wickets came in his fourth over, the 19th of the innings. On the first delivery of the over, Archer’s knuckleball saw Krunal Pandya (7) mistimed an aerial shot to Heinrich Klaasen at long on. Hardik Pandya replaced his brother in the middle, hitting the his first ball for a cracking four down the ground.
On the fourth delivery of the over, Archer’s yorker saw the better of Hardik Pandya (4) as the Indian all-rounder was seen losing his middle stump. Mitchell McClenaghan (0), the next man in, too failed to make any contact with Archer’s yorker as Archer picked up his third wicket.
