Kolkata Knight Riders turned the tables on the leaders Chennai Super Kings as they managed to defeat the toppers with as many as 14 balls remaining. KKR registered a 6 wickets victory over CSK and now move to the third spot with five wins in the nine matches while CSK drops to the second spot with three losses in their nine matches. The turning point of tonight’s match occurred in KKR’s 15th over.

Shubhman Gill

Earlier in the night, KKR captain Karthik won the toss and chose to field first. Chennai had a decent start and a great platform to build on but the KKR spinners kept them quiet and despite a magnificent assault from MS Dhoni, Chennai could only post 177 which was 15 runs below par.

The start from Kolkata was explosive with their Australian opener Chris Lynn smacking two sixes in the over of Lungi Ngidi. Lynn was dismissed in the same over though. Sunil Narine continued the momentum of the innings and kept sending the ball regularly over the boundary ropes. Narine’s innings ended on 32 from 20 balls.

After Uthappa’s departure, Shubhman Gill stepped up on the opportunity which he received tonight and set his mind on the chase. Captain Dinesh Karthik then joined the youngster. At the end of the 14 overs, KKR were at 120/4 and needed 58 runs in 36 balls. Next over was handed to KM Asif.

The first ball from KM Asif was short on the off-stump and Gill pulled it over mid-wicket for a six. Next two balls went for only two runs. Another short ball outside off stump came Gill’s way and this time it was dispatched through the offside for another six. To make the over worse, Karthik pulled another six on the last ball of the over.

The complete over accounted for 21 runs. The required run-rate which was 9.66, now dropped to only 7.40. The over eased the pressure on the KKR batsmen and they cantered to a win.
