Mumbai Indians kept their chances of qualifying in the first four spots alive with a spectacular win over Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. KKR chasing 181 started off well and made their task excruciatingly difficult by not attacking in the death overs. MI won the match by 13 runs.
The opening partnership was a new one today for Kolkata. Instead of Narine and they sent in Shubman Gill. Both Lynn and Gill struggled in the opening overs and gave the advantage to Mumbai. Uthappa made the most of his dropped chance and added 50 extra runs, putting Mumbai under the pump.
By the time last three overs arrived, Kolkata needed 43 runs from 18 balls. With one over to be bowled by Bumrah, they had to make the most of the remaining overs. Hardik Pandya who had 13/2 in three overs geared up to bowl the over.
With Karthik and Narine at the crease, the challenge was always going to be a tough one for Hardik. Having won the purple cap just a few minutes ago, Hardik bowled exceptionally well and gave only six runs including one four. Both his slower balls were dot balls and he kept the run-rate down.
Next two overs, Kolkata failed to hit big and could score only 23 runs which ultimately were 13 runs short from the target. Krunal Pandya bowling the last over gave only nine runs and won the match for Mumbai Indians. it was Hardik’s over that tilted the match in Mumbai’s favor.
Earlier in the day, Mumbai Indians could not pile up a mammoth total batting first against Kolkata Knight Riders. At one stage, when Surya Kumar Yadav and Evin Lewis were cutting loose, the total looked definitely going past 200 but KKR managed a comeback courtesy of their excellent bowling discipline.
After scoring 95 runs in the first 10 overs, Mumbai added only 86 runs in the last 10 overs despite having all ten batsmen in the hand. Andre Russell was the pick of the bowlers as he got 2/12 in his two overs. Surya continued his rich form with another fifty, 59 runs from 39 balls.
