Earlier Kane Williamson, captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad, had won the toss and chose to field. Sunrisers Hyderabad rested Bhuvneshwar Kumar for this match, replacing him with Thampi. On the other hand, Royal Challengers Bangalore fielded an unchanged playing eleven.

With Parthiv Patel (1) and Virat Kohli (12) back in the pavilion, Royal Challengers Bangalore lost their openers cheaply in the powerplay. Just when the run-scoring had slowed down, Moeen Ali broke the shackles in the eighth over. Ali came in to bat at No. 4 in the fifth over.
