Both the teams won their respective home matches against each other last year. While RCB won by 14 runs at Bangalore, SRH won by a narrow margin of 5 runs at Hyderabad. While RCB finished sixth on the table, SRH went on to play the finals against CSK but ended as being the runner-ups.
