Today was the day when 8 years ago, the Indian team lifted the World Cup trophy under the captaincy of MS Dhoni after a huge gap of 28 years. In front of a jam-packed crowd at the Wankhede Stadium, Dhoni and his men defeated Kumar Sangakkara-led Sri Lanka by 6 wickets to re-write the history books. On the 8th anniversary of India’s World Cup triumph, Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians (MI) shared a special selfie which featured Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan, and Yuvraj Singh.

On their official Twitter account, MI shared the picture with the caption, “India’s leading run-getter. Leading wicket-taker. Man of the Tournament. As the clock strikes 12, three members from India’s 2011 World Cup winning side reunite for a selfie on the same day in the same city”.

All three cricketers played a crucial role in India’s title-winning campaign in 2011. While Zaheer was the joint highest-wicket taker with Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi with 21 wickets, the Master Blaster was India’s highest run-scorer with 482 runs under his belt in 9 matches. Yuvraj, who scored 362 runs from 8 matches and also claimed 15 wickets, was adjudged Man of the Series for his all-around performance.

Batting first, with the help of a magnificent century by Mahela Jayawardene (103* off 88), Sri Lanka posted a competitive total of 274 runs on board. In reply, the hosts were in pressure of chasing the total which was never chased down in theWorld Cup final and the pressure increased with the early dismissals of Virender Sehwag (0) and Tendulkar (18). But Gautam Gambhir (97), Virat Kohli (35) and Dhoni (91*) made sure that hosts successfully chased down the target. Dhoni (91*) finished the proceedings with a six over long-on – a shot which is an unforgettable moment in the memories of Indian cricket fans.

With the victory, Dhoni also became the first captain to win both T20 as well as ODI World Cups. In 2007, soon after taking over the captaincy, he guided Men in Blue to triumph in inaugural ICC World Twenty20. It was also after 28 years that India won a World Cup. Legendary Indian cricketer Kapil Dev had guided India to its maiden World Cup title in 1983 – when India defeated West Indies.
