Accoridng to the latest reports, the format of the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been revealed. All 10 teams will be playing 14 matches at the league stages in the IPL 2022. Each side will be locking horns with five teams twice and once with four teams. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made the major announcement on Friday (February 25).
As revealed by the BCCI, the two groups were made based on a seeding system based on the number of IPL titles won and the number of final appearances. Hence, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, five and four-time winners respectively, headlined the two groups. The two new teams – Super Giants and Gujarat Titans – are also placed in two separate groups.

Now, this format is pretty different from what was used in IPL 2011, which also saw 10 franchise bidding in the auction. Although the number of league-stage matches for a team was the same, the division of groups was slightly different. Back then, 10 teams were split into two groups.
Each team played twice against the teams of their groups and once against the other four teams. Meanwhile, it has also been confirmed that the tournament will get underway on March 26 while the final will take place on May 29.
