The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has significantly streamlined the IPL 2025 Auction register, reducing it from 1,574 names to 574. However, not all the shortlisted players will necessarily be presented for bidding during the mega auction scheduled for November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
An accelerated auction process will begin after the initial 116 players have been presented for bidding. Ricky Bhui is slated as the 117th player on the list. In its communication to the franchises on November 15, the BCCI outlined critical details regarding the auction procedure.
The BCCI stated: “Subject to timings, it is envisaged that the accelerated process will start after player no.116. The first accelerated process will cover players numbered 117 to 574. Franchises will need to nominate a set number of players from this group by 10 PM on the evening of November 24.”

Following this phase, franchises can request unpresented or unsold players from the full list of 574 for further consideration in a subsequent accelerated round, details of which will be discussed at the auction briefing on November 23.
The auction will commence with marquee players, divided into two sets. The first marquee set includes Jos Buttler, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Kagiso Rabada, Arshdeep Singh, and Mitchell Starc. The second set features Yuzvendra Chahal, Liam Livingstone, David Miller, KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj.

This will be followed by capped players categorized by skill set—batters, all-rounders, wicketkeeper-batters, pacers, and spinners—before moving to uncapped players.
A notable omission from the auction register is England’s star pacer Jofra Archer. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has ruled him out to prioritize his fitness for upcoming national assignments. This decision, coupled with the BCCI’s selection of only 12 marquee players, has sparked discussions.

Franchises, expecting at least 20 marquee players after learning there would be two marquee sets, have expressed surprise at the limited number, as reported by Cricbuzz. The streamlined auction format and marquee player choices will undoubtedly shape the strategies of franchises as they prepare for the league’s 18th season.
