The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, which has been on a temporary halt due to rising geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan, is expected to resume soon with a potential shift in its most anticipated event — the final. Initially scheduled to be held at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on May 25, the summit clash could now be moved to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The decision is being considered due to unfavourable weather forecasts in Kolkata, where heavy rain and thunderstorms are predicted on the final day. Ahmedabad, with its massive seating capacity and modern infrastructure, has previously hosted two IPL finals in 2022 and 2023 and is now emerging as the frontrunner for this season’s decider as well.

While Eden Gardens remains an iconic venue, the BCCI is wary of taking any risks, especially after one rain-affected match in Kolkata this season, when the April 26 fixture between KKR and Punjab Kings was abandoned due to persistent showers. The league was officially suspended on May 9 for a week following heightened border tensions, but a ceasefire declared on May 10 offered some relief.

However, the BCCI is yet to confirm a final decision regarding the resumption. As per reports, the board is planning to restart the tournament around May 16 or 17, with the match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Lucknow Super Giants likely to open proceedings post-break in Lucknow.

Rajeev Shukla, BCCI Vice-President, confirmed that while no final call has been made yet, plans are being actively discussed. “The tournament will be restarted soon,” he said, speaking to the media.

Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator are still likely to be hosted in Hyderabad as scheduled, but the final and Qualifier 2 could shift away from Kolkata. While many teams have allowed their players and staff to return home during the break, Gujarat Titans have continued their training sessions in Ahmedabad. Sunrisers Hyderabad, last year’s runners-up, have also resumed full-fledged practice at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans’ captain Shubman Gill has remained with the squad, although overseas stars like Jos Buttler and Gerald Coetzee have briefly returned home.
