The highly anticipated dates and venue for the IPL 2025 mega auction are nearing finalization, with reports suggesting that the event will take place in Riyadh, the capital city of Saudi Arabia, on November 24 and 25, according to Sportstar. This upcoming auction marks a shift from last year’s event, which was held in Dubai, UAE, and will be the first time an IPL auction is conducted in Riyadh or anywhere else in Saudi Arabia.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has shared a preliminary itinerary with the franchises regarding the mega auction but has yet to make an official announcement. Fans and teams alike are eagerly awaiting confirmation, which is expected in the coming days. Other cities, including London and Singapore, were also considered for hosting the auction.

However, Saudi Arabia’s favourable time zone for broadcasting and its potential as a revenue generator played significant roles in the decision-making process. Sources indicate that BCCI officials and IPL organizers are finalizing the venue capable of accommodating a large delegation that includes representatives from all ten franchises as well as crew members from broadcasters Disney Star and Jio.

The delegation is likely to stay for three days, with the auction itself scheduled over two days. This auction is a crucial opportunity for franchises as they strategize to build strong teams for the future.

As anticipation builds, franchises are eager for the BCCI to officially announce the venue and dates so they can address logistical challenges promptly. Although Saudi Arabia may be more expensive than Dubai for such events, the BCCI believes that exploring new markets is essential for the growth of cricket, particularly in less traditional regions like Saudi Arabia. The IPL stands as the most popular T20 league globally, boasting significant revenue and attracting the world’s top cricketers.

In preparation for the mega auction, franchises must submit their lists of retained players by October 31. Under the new IPL rules, each team is allowed to retain a maximum of six players, including one uncapped player. Additionally, a team can retain up to two uncapped players, which adds an exciting dynamic to the auction strategy.

The anticipation for the auction in Saudi Arabia is palpable, as fans and teams alike await what could be a landmark moment for the IPL and cricket in the region.
