Momentum, or the lack of it, has defined the IPL 2026 campaigns of both Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Kolkata Knight Riders (LSG). What began with bold intent for LSG — highlighted by their slogan “Ab apni baari hai” — has now turned into a frustrating stretch of results. Four consecutive defeats have pushed them down to ninth on the points table, leaving their playoff hopes hanging by a thread.

If LSG are struggling, KKR aren’t in a much better position. Rooted at the bottom for most of the season, they finally broke a five-match winless run with a much-needed victory over the Rajasthan Royals. That result, coupled with a short break, might just give them a chance to reset mentally ahead of this crucial clash.
Despite strong home support — including a 42,000-strong crowd in their last outing — LSG have failed to deliver results in Lucknow. Their home record has been particularly concerning, with a string of defeats stretching back to last season. Coach Justin Langer has openly admitted the team’s frustration, especially given their inability to convert opportunities.

LSG’s batting has been their biggest concern. Constant reshuffling, including promoting Ayush Badoni as an opener, hasn’t paid off. Meanwhile, Nicholas Pooran has struggled to replicate last season’s form, particularly against spin.
KKR, on the other hand, have faltered in crunch moments, losing multiple games in the final over. However, signs of revival are visible with Varun Chakravarthy and Rinku Singh rediscovering form, while Matheesha Pathirana adds firepower.
With the match set to be played on a black-soil pitch, expect better batting conditions and increased assistance for spinners — a factor that could heavily influence the outcome.
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)

Newly married Josh Inglis is expected to join the LSG camp next week, while young pacer Mayank Yadav returned in the previous match but endured a tough outing, conceding 56 runs. With Avesh Khan also proving expensive, LSG may rethink their bowling combination. Preparation-wise, LSG kept things low-key, skipping training two days before the match. Even Rishabh Pant, usually meticulous with pitch assessments, was absent from practice.

KKR have received a major boost with Matheesha Pathirana joining the squad. The Sri Lankan quick looked sharp in training, bowling pinpoint yorkers to Rinku Singh and Angkrish Raghuvanshi. Team management now faces a selection dilemma, with potential changes involving Tim Seifert or Rovman Powell.
