A week can feel like a lifetime in the IPL, particularly during the business end of the league stage, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are experiencing that shift firsthand. Returning from a short break, RCB still hold second place on the points table, but the margin for error has significantly narrowed. What once looked like a comfortable gap between the top teams and the rest has now turned into a tightly contested race, with multiple sides pushing hard for playoff spots.

Despite their strong position, RCB have a few concerns to address. All three of their defeats this season have come while batting first, exposing a recurring pattern. While their top order has maintained an aggressive scoring rate, the transition into the middle overs hasn’t always been smooth. Vice-captain Jitesh Sharma, who plays a crucial role in stabilising the innings, hasn’t quite found his rhythm, which has impacted their ability to build momentum consistently. It’s not a major flaw yet, but it’s an area that could become decisive in close matches.

In contrast, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) find themselves at the bottom of the table, struggling for consistency and results. Captain Rishabh Pant has openly acknowledged the team’s challenges, but this position can sometimes work in their favour. With little to lose, LSG have the freedom to play without pressure, something Nicholas Pooran demonstrated with his recent return to form.

That unpredictability makes Lucknow a tricky opponent. Teams out of contention often disrupt the plans of those fighting for qualification, and RCB will be wary of that threat.

Conditions at the Ekana Stadium suggest a relatively low-scoring encounter, with the highest total this season being 165. The dry surface is expected to favour chasing sides, making the toss an important factor. Historically, RCB have dominated this fixture, leading the head-to-head 5-2 and winning both previous matches at this venue. However, in a season where momentum shifts quickly, past records may count for little in what promises to be a crucial contest.

Lucknow Super Giants experimented with their batting combination in the previous game, promoting Josh Inglis to open while moving Nicholas Pooran to No. 3. This reshuffle pushed Rishabh Pant and Aiden Markram further down the order. The move appeared to work initially, as LSG raced to an impressive 123/1 in just eight overs.

However, familiar issues resurfaced in the latter half of the innings, with the side failing to capitalise fully and finishing on 228. While it remains a competitive total, it once again highlighted their inconsistency in closing out innings. With limited options available, LSG may look to persist with this combination and hope for better execution.

Probable XII: Mitchell Marsh, Josh Inglis, Nicholas Pooran, Rishabh Pant (c&wk), Aiden Markram, Akshat Raghuwanshi, Himmat Singh, Mohammed Shami, Mohsin Khan, Price Yadav, Avesh Khan, Digvesh Rathi

RCB, meanwhile, are dealing with their own selection concerns. Phil Salt is expected to miss out again as he continues to recover from a finger injury, which opens the door for Jacob Bethell to get an extended run at the top of the order. RCB also faced a minor setback in their previous outing against the Gujarat Titans, where a cluster of wickets disrupted their plans and forced a change in their Impact Player strategy. Although Venkatesh Iyer was brought into the game instead of Rasikh Salam, such adjustments are unlikely to become a regular feature moving forward.

Probable XII: Jacob Bethell, Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar (c), Jitesh Sharma (wk), Tim David, Romario Shepherd, Krunal Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Josh Hazlewood, Suyash Sharma, Rasikh Salam Dar
