Gujarat Titans (GT) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head into their IPL 2026 clash at Eden Gardens with completely contrasting momentum and objectives. Gujarat Titans have emerged as one of the strongest teams of the season and currently sit near the top of the points table alongside Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Shubman Gill’s side is riding a dominant five-match winning streak and another victory could strengthen their push for a top-two finish in IPL 2026.

A major reason behind Gujarat’s consistency has been its outstanding bowling attack. Their recent win against Sunrisers Hyderabad once again highlighted their quality with the ball, especially during the powerplay. The pace duo of Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada has consistently delivered crucial breakthroughs, giving GT early control in matches. That bowling depth has perfectly complemented Gujarat’s reliable top order, where multiple batters have consistently produced big scores throughout the tournament.

The balance between batting firepower and disciplined bowling has turned GT into one of the most complete sides in IPL 2026. In contrast, Kolkata Knight Riders continue to battle inconsistency and playoff pressure. The defending champions have struggled for rhythm this season and remain stuck in a complicated qualification scenario. At different stages, KKR looked close to crashing out of the tournament, but a fighting run of victories kept their campaign alive.

However, their recent defeat against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru has once again left them in a must-win situation. Kolkata now not only need victories in their remaining matches but must also rely on favourable results from other teams to stay in contention for the playoffs.

The conditions at Eden Gardens could add another interesting layer to the contest. The venue has largely favoured chasing teams this season, with targets of 181 and 155 successfully chased down in completed games. Although Sunrisers Hyderabad defended a 200-plus total earlier, batting second has generally remained the preferred option.

Historically, the Gujarat Titans have also dominated this rivalry. GT lead the overall head-to-head record 4-1, while one match ended without a result. More importantly, Kolkata Knight Riders have lost both their previous home matches against Gujarat Titans at Eden Gardens.

Varun Chakravarthy could return to action for Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of their crucial IPL 2026 clash against Gujarat Titans after missing the previous game with a niggle. The mystery spinner reportedly bowled in the nets on the eve of the match, while KKR’s medical and coaching staff continue to closely monitor his fitness. Meanwhile, Rachin Ravindra has officially left the Kolkata camp to prepare for New Zealand’s upcoming Test series against England after spending the entire IPL 2026 season without featuring in a single match.

If Varun returns to the playing XI, his battle against Jos Buttler could become one of the key contests of the match. Despite scoring 88 runs off 61 deliveries against Varun in T20 cricket at a strike rate above 144, Buttler has also been dismissed seven times by the spinner, highlighting the risk-reward nature of the matchup.

Gujarat Titans may also tweak their bowling combination depending on conditions at Eden Gardens. GT used Prasidh Krishna as their Impact Player against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the previous match, but they could consider bringing back Sai Kishore if the surface offers more assistance to spin.

Even if Buttler struggles against Varun, Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill has historically handled the spinner comfortably. Gill has scored 63 runs off 38 balls against Varun in T20s without being dismissed even once, making that battle equally important in this high-pressure encounter.

Probable XII: Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill (c), Jos Buttler, Nishant Sindhu, Washington Sundar, Jason Holder, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Arshad Khan, Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna
