The upcoming IPL 2026 clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium may appear like a dead rubber at first glance, especially with both teams already qualified for the playoffs. However, the contest carries massive significance in the race for a top-two finish, particularly for the Pat Cummins-led Sunrisers Hyderabad.

RCB currently sit comfortably at the top of the IPL 2026 points table with 18 points and an impressive net run rate of +1.065. A victory against SRH would officially confirm their place at the summit heading into the playoffs. Even if they lose, Bengaluru’s superior NRR means it would take a heavy defeat for other teams to push them out of the top two.
The real battle, though, is between SRH and Gujarat Titans for second place. Both sides are locked on 16 points, with Gujarat holding a marginally better net run rate of +0.400 compared to Hyderabad’s +0.350. SRH will also enjoy the advantage of knowing exactly what they need after GT complete their final league game against Chennai Super Kings.

One major positive for Sunrisers Hyderabad heading into this blockbuster encounter is their exceptional home record in night matches this season. SRH remain unbeaten in evening games in Hyderabad and have won four of their six matches at the venue overall. Interestingly, both their defeats at home came during day fixtures.
RCB, meanwhile, have looked vulnerable away from home, with three of their four defeats this season coming on the road. SRH will certainly look to exploit that weakness. The two sides previously met in the IPL 2026 opener on March 28, where RCB comfortably chased down 202 in Bengaluru. However, SRH were without skipper Pat Cummins in that match and lacked balance in their bowling attack.
Historically, SRH have enjoyed a slight edge in this rivalry, winning 14 of the 27 IPL meetings compared to RCB’s 12 victories, while one game ended without a result.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)

SRH are unlikely to make any changes to their playing XI for the crucial IPL 2026 clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), especially after back-to-back victories. With all players fit and available, SRH are expected to stick with their winning combination. Travis Head and Sakib Hussain are likely to continue as the team’s Impact Player options depending on the match situation.
Probable XII: Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan (wk), Heinrich Klaasen, Salil Arora, R Smaran, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Pat Cummins (capt), Shivang Kumar, Eshan Malinga, Sakib Hussain, Praful Hinge.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)

For RCB, the biggest boost is the return of captain Rajat Patidar, who missed the previous game against Punjab Kings due to injury. RCB director of cricket Mo Bobat confirmed that Patidar has fully recovered and is available for selection against SRH. Patidar’s comeback, however, creates an interesting selection headache for Bengaluru.
In his absence, Venkatesh Iyer impressed with a match-winning knock against PBKS and earned the Player-of-the-Match award. RCB could now consider promoting Iyer to the opening slot, especially with Jacob Bethell struggling for consistency this season. Another possibility is Iyer replacing Romario Shepherd in the middle order. Meanwhile, Phil Salt is still recovering from his finger injury and is expected to return during the playoffs.
Probable XII: Venkatesh Iyer, Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar (capt), Tim David, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Romario Shepherd, Krunal Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rasikh Salam, Josh Hazlewood, Jacob Duffy.
