The IPL 2026 playoff race is heading towards a dramatic finish, and all eyes will first be on the clash between the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium. For Rajasthan Royals, the equation is simple — win and secure a place in the playoffs. A victory would officially eliminate every other contender still hanging in the race and confirm RR’s spot in the Eliminator. However, if Rajasthan stumble against the Mumbai Indians, the spotlight will quickly shift to Kolkata, where the Kolkata Knight Riders will take the field against the Delhi Capitals with renewed hope.

KKR would then remain alive in the qualification race and could potentially book a playoff berth depending on the result between Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants. Net run-rate scenarios may also come into play, adding another layer of tension to the final league fixtures. Despite the high-pressure situation, KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar insisted there is no nervousness within the camp.

Speaking ahead of the crucial fixture, Nayar stressed the importance of focusing only on controllable factors and playing positive cricket regardless of the qualification permutations. He also highlighted that even if playoff qualification is not guaranteed, there is still plenty at stake for individual players and the franchise. Strong performances, milestones, and finishing the campaign with momentum remain key objectives for the team.

Delhi Capitals, meanwhile, are still mathematically alive but face a far more complicated path. If Punjab Kings defeat Lucknow Super Giants, DC will officially crash out of the playoff race. Even if results go their way, Delhi’s poor net run-rate could still prove costly in a potential tie on points with Rajasthan Royals. The pitch for the Kolkata encounter is expected to be the same surface used earlier this season against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

That match produced a massive first-innings total of 226 before the pitch slowed considerably as the game progressed. The grassy surface is once again expected to assist stroke-makers early on before offering help to slower bowlers later in the innings. Weather conditions are unlikely to interrupt the contest, with no rain forecast in Kolkata. Dew is also not expected to play a major role, meaning both captains could prefer batting first in what promises to be another high-scoring Powerplay battle on a tricky surface.

Kolkata Knight Riders head coach Abhishek Nayar has revealed that mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy has been playing through a fractured toe during IPL 2026, underlining the bowler’s commitment in the crucial phase of the tournament. KKR, however, have suffered a major setback with young batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi ruled out for the remainder of the season due to concussion and a finger fracture.

Meanwhile, fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana is expected to miss another game as he continues recovering from a hamstring injury. The Sri Lankan pacer only participated in light jogging drills during training.

With a slow surface likely to assist spinners, KKR could strategically hold back some overs of Varun Chakaravarthy for the death overs. The spinner has historically enjoyed success against David Miller, dismissing him four times in T20 cricket despite the batter maintaining a high strike rate. KKR’s spin duo of Varun and Sunil Narine could also target Delhi Capitals skipper Axar Patel early, considering his struggles against spin.

For DC, there are no fresh injury concerns. Axar Patel may take the new ball, especially given his strong record against KKR’s opening batters. Meanwhile, wicketkeeper Tejasvi Dahiya is set to continue behind the stumps after an extended keeping and batting session ahead of the match.
