The much-debated Impact Player rule is reportedly set to continue in IPL 2027, despite ongoing criticism from players, coaches and former cricketers. With the next season approaching, franchises have already started factoring the rule’s expected continuation into their squad-building plans and preparations for the upcoming mini auction.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, the IPL Governing Council (GC) has not yet formally communicated its decision to all ten franchises. However, teams are operating under the assumption that the Impact Player rule will remain part of the tournament’s playing conditions for the 2027 season.
This expectation has also influenced trade discussions and auction strategies. Several franchises have built their squads around the flexibility of having an additional batting or bowling option, making a sudden change in the regulations potentially disruptive. An IPL official reportedly indicated that the timing of the next season makes a rule change unlikely.

“The next edition will be the last before a mega auction cycle and a rule change now would be too late for the teams. It’s unlikely there would be any change,” the official was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times. The possibility of scrapping the Impact Player rule had gained attention earlier this year after the IPL Governing Council sought feedback from all ten franchises as part of a wider review of the tournament’s playing conditions.

The consultation renewed speculation about its future, particularly given the concerns raised by several prominent figures in Indian cricket. According to another IPL team official, at least four franchises had highlighted how removing the provision at this stage could seriously affect their plans. “At least four teams had informed IPL that withdrawal of the rule this late would hamper their strategy significantly,” the official was quoted as saying.
Introduced in IPL 2023, the Impact Player rule allows each team to use one substitute during a match, effectively providing the option of fielding 12 players across the contest instead of the traditional 11.
Before the match, teams nominate five substitutes. One of them can be introduced as an Impact Player at a suitable stage, replacing a member of the playing XI. The incoming player can bat and bowl under the applicable playing conditions, while the substituted player cannot take any further part in the match.

The provision has significantly changed how franchises approach team selection and T20 cricket. Teams can now prioritise specialist batters or bowlers without worrying as much about maintaining the traditional balance within their playing XI. However, the rule has also attracted criticism for its impact on all-rounders. With franchises able to introduce an additional specialist, the importance of players who contribute effectively with both bat and ball has arguably reduced.
Bowlers have also faced greater challenges, as deeper batting line-ups allow teams to maintain an aggressive approach for longer periods. If the Impact Player rule remains for IPL 2027, franchises will continue to enjoy this tactical flexibility. Its future beyond the upcoming season, however, could remain a major talking point ahead of the next mega auction cycle.
