If the recent reports believed to be true, the Indian Broadcast and Sports Ministry are likely to send out an order asking BCCI to telecast Indian Premier League (IPL) matches on Doordarshan.

Doordarshan is free-to-air channel run by Government of India. Ever since the inception of IPL, it has been broadcasted on private channels (Sony and its associates till 2017), but this move will help cricket reach a bigger audience.

Hence, the prospect of broadcasting it in Doordarshan is doubtful to go down well with a private organization like STAR, who acquired the rights to a whopping amount.

According to the reports of the replublicnworld.com, the I&B ministry has been doing its paperwork to make this proposal a feasible one for weeks. All this comes after earlier in the year Star India inked a breathing take the deal of INR 16,435 crores for IPL media rights for the next five editions.

Earlier, Sony had bought the IPL media rights from 2009 to 2017 for INR 10,436 crores. This comes down to approximately INR 1,160 crores per year. Nonetheless, with Star’s deal, the amount will square up around 182 percent hike for BCCI; or nearly thrice the amount from their previous earnings.
