Before India’s squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 was announced, captain Suryakumar Yadav made a call that would set the tone for the tournament. On the other end was Ishan Kishan, fresh off a sensational Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign with Jharkhand cricket team. Kishan had not only guided his state to its maiden title but also finished as the tournament’s highest run-scorer, showcasing the form and confidence that would define his World Cup journey.

Kishan recalls immediately understanding the purpose of the call. Even instinctively, he snapped a screenshot of the incoming notification for memory’s sake. Suryakumar’s question was simple and direct: “World Cup jitayega?” (Will you win us the World Cup?). Kishan responded in kind: “Bharosa karoge?” (Will you have faith in me?). A short pause, a nod of affirmation, and the foundation of trust was set.
Ishan Kishan ensured that faith was not misplaced, ending the tournament with 317 runs and delivering a match-winning 54 in the final as India dismantled New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Yet behind the on-field brilliance, Kishan carried personal heartbreak. Just days before the final, he learned of the tragic death of his cousin sister in a car accident.

“To be very honest, before the game I was not planning to say this, but I’ll say it. My cousin sister passed away in a car accident and I got to know about it a few days back. She always wanted me to score big runs,” Ishan Kishan told PTI. He dedicated his innings to her memory, looking skyward after reaching his fifty as a heartfelt tribute.
Ishan Kishan said : “When Suryakumar called me a few months back to tell me about my selection in the World Cup squad, he asked me, ‘Can you win the World Cup for me?’, Kishan said. “I just asked him back, ‘Will you trust me?’ and he said ‘Yes, I will trust you”, pic.twitter.com/swNbeszqdl

Despite the emotional strain, Kishan’s focus remained on the team. “Since last night I was not feeling alright and kept thinking about what had happened. But at the end of the day you have to keep the team ahead because cricket is not an individual sport,” he said.
Reflecting on India’s approach, Kishan highlighted the importance of simplicity and trust.

When you keep it simple, it becomes easier for a player.” His composure and dedication under pressure underscored why he became a central figure in India’s historic T20 World Cup 2026 triumph.
