Ishan Kishan has made it clear that he remains eager to return to India’s Test team, insisting that he genuinely enjoys red-ball cricket despite doubts surrounding his preference for the format. The India wicketkeeper-batter believes playing Test cricket brings a unique challenge and helps a player develop significantly.
With Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel currently competing for the wicketkeeper’s spot in India’s Test XI, Ishan Kishan faces a difficult path back into the side. However, the left-hander remains determined to put together strong performances in domestic cricket and make his case for an international recall. Ishan recently led East Zone to a commanding innings-and-210-run victory over North-East Zone in the Duleep Trophy quarter-final. Following the impressive win, he spoke openly about his desire to play Test cricket for India again.
“One hundred per cent. Anyone who has played Tests would love this format. We know its importance and how it helps one get better. People don’t believe me, but I really do enjoy red-ball cricket,” Ishan Kishan told reporters when asked about his Test ambitions.

The 27-year-old last played Test cricket during India’s tour of the West Indies in 2023, featuring in two matches. He has not added to his Test tally since then. India subsequently preferred KL Rahul as their wicketkeeper during the South Africa series later that year, while Ishan returned home and also missed the Ranji Trophy.

Since returning to domestic cricket, however, Ishan Kishan has focused on rebuilding his credentials and competing for a place in the Indian team. His recent performances have strengthened his case and highlighted his determination to make another push for international cricket.
The Jharkhand-born batter also explained why he enjoys the challenges associated with red-ball cricket. According to Ishan, the changing conditions, pressure from the opposition, and constant contest between bat and ball make Test cricket particularly rewarding.

“I love this game (red ball). I enjoy it because when you are in the middle, the ball is moving, players are coming at you, there is banter going on with the other team,” he said. With India’s Test wicketkeeping options already strong, Ishan will need consistent performances to force his way back into contention.
