India’s swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan made a memorable entry into the County Championship with a brisk 98-ball 87 for Nottinghamshire against Yorkshire at Trent Bridge on Monday. Playing in his maiden county game, Ishan lit up the contest with an aggressive counter-attack that included 12 boundaries and a six, stamping his class in English conditions.
Batting at No. 6, the 26-year-old brought up his half-century in just 57 deliveries, with two cracking boundaries off Kiwi pacer Will O’Rourke. Though he fell short of a debut hundred, his innings left a lasting impression before off-spinner Dom Bess ended his stay.
Kishan has joined Nottinghamshire on a short two-match stint, replacing South Africa’s Kyle Verreynne, who has returned home for national duties in the Zimbabwe Test series. Verreynne was part of the Proteas squad that recently triumphed over Australia in the ICC World Test Championship final.

“I’m really excited to experience county cricket and test myself in English conditions,” Kishan had said before his debut. “Playing at a historic venue like Trent Bridge, which is so well-known in India, is a big moment for me. I want to continue evolving as a cricketer and this experience will be invaluable.”

The Jharkhand batter brings a solid domestic résumé, having scored 3447 runs in 58 first-class games at an average nearing 38, including eight centuries and 17 fifties. He made his Test debut for India in 2023, scoring a half-century in just his second outing.

Ishan is among several Indian players featuring in the 2025 county season. Others include Ruturaj Gaikwad (Yorkshire), Tilak Varma (Hampshire), and Yuzvendra Chahal (Northamptonshire), each using this opportunity to sharpen their skills in England’s challenging red-ball circuit.
