Jasprit Bumrah and broadcaster Sanjana Ganesan recently opened up about the early days of their relationship, tracing their story back to the 2019 World Cup in England. Appearing on former cricketer Harbhajan Singh and his wife Geeta Basra’s YouTube show ahead of the ongoing five-Test series against England, the couple shared candid memories that offered a glimpse into their journey together.

Sanjana recalled that during the 2019 World Cup, while she was working as a broadcaster and interacting casually with Indian players like Dinesh Karthik, Bumrah seemed distant and completely aloof.
“Every time I’d walk onto the field, others would wave and say ‘hi’. But Jasprit would stand there stone-faced. I thought maybe he had a girlfriend or wife watching him from somewhere, so he didn’t want to even make eye contact,” Sanjana Ganesan laughed.

Jasprit Bumrah, meanwhile, had a different explanation. “This story is very one-sided,” he said with a grin. “She assumed I was married just because I didn’t say hi? That’s ridiculous logic! The truth is, I’m shy by nature and take time to open up to new people. I don’t randomly say hello, especially to someone I didn’t really know. But Sanjana decided I must be taken just because I kept to myself.”

Their initial awkwardness eventually turned into friendship and, later, romance. The two started dating a few months before getting married in 2021. In 2023, they welcomed their first child, a son named Angad. Now, the couple often share their love for each other and the game through social media and interviews.

Bumrah played the first Test of the current series at Headingley, where Sanjana was on duty interviewing players, including her husband. As India looks to regroup for the second Test in Birmingham, starting July 2, there are discussions within the camp about whether Bumrah, who played a key role in the first game, will be rested or fielded again given the tight schedule and workload concerns.
Off the field, the couple continues to share light-hearted moments like these, giving fans a glimpse of the human side of players who often seem unapproachable amidst the intense glare of international cricket.
