Virat Kohli hasn’t had a great opening to the Test season as he managed scores of 2 and 0 in a match against Bangladesh in Chennai. Coming into the second Test at Kanpur, India is readying with the batting maestro putting in extra hours at the nets, but not with hoped-for results. Practice reports are again saying that Kohli is troubled through and through by top Indian bowlers, more so by Jasprit Bumrah and the spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel.
Indian Express is claiming Bumrah dismissed Kohli ‘four times’ in 15 deliveries. Kohli began well enough but soon was under the pump as the line and length by Bumrah continued to test his former skipper.

Among those deliveries, one was a trapped LBW, and Bumrah wasn’t second-guessing. This is plumb, he asserted. Viart Kohli nodded at the dismissal but refused to let go of the pressure as he edged several balls – with one looking like a possible catch at short leg. Kohli didn’t get some respite even as he turned his face to face the spinners.

Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, both left-arm spinners, kept him on his toes. He struggled to read Jadeja’s deliveries and was beaten repeatedly down the edge. Axar even bowled one through the gate, clean-bowling Kohli before he eventually left the nets, looking visibly frustrated.

Kohli played only 6 and 17 in India’s thumping victory by 280 runs during the first Test of the series. This was his second match in 2024, as he had sat out the entire home series against England due to personal reasons. They will be looking at his return to form ahead of a more critical tour of Australia later in the year for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Kohli’s form would make all the difference to India as they seek to cement their place in the ICC World Test Championship final.
