The Border-Gavaskar Trophy has always been a stage for intense cricketing rivalries, and the 2024-25 edition has been no different. Among the many fiery moments, the heated exchange between India’s premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah and Australia’s 19-year-old opener Sam Konstas during the Sydney Test stood out.

The young opener, stationed at the non-striker’s end, instigated Bumrah, usually known for his calm demeanor. This rare provocation saw the Indian skipper lose his composure. Moments later, Bumrah dismissed Usman Khawaja and celebrated emphatically, directing his emotions towards Konstas.

Reflecting on the incident, Bumrah shared his perspective on aggression as a fast bowler during an interview with Forbes India. “I am aggressive; it’s just that I don’t need to go and abuse the batsman,” Jasprit Bumrah explained. “As a kid, I watched bowlers on TV screaming and shouting, and I tried to emulate that in club cricket. But I realized it didn’t work for me. I’d become too aggressive and lose control.”

Over time, Bumrah worked on channeling his aggression differently, which he believes is now a strength. “When I’m nice, calm, and relaxed, people don’t know what’s going on in my head. That gives me a mental edge. Staying calm allows me to make better decisions on the field,” he elaborated.

When asked if he has ever sledged an opponent, Jasprit Bumrah admitted it happens but emphasized his restraint. “I won’t lie—it does happen during the game. But I don’t start it. If it comes my way, I won’t back down because that’s how I started playing cricket,” he remarked. However, Bumrah consciously avoids initiating on-field battles, focusing instead on staying in his zone and maintaining control.
