The premier Indian fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah has been one of the most impactful bowlers in Team India ever since his debut in 2016. India’s tour of Australia started early in January 2016 and in the 5-match ODI series, India had lost the first four ODIs despite a lot of runs being scored from the Indian top-order, including Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, and Virat Kohli, leaving the fans and captain MS Dhoni in distress.
Then came Jasprit Bumrah, who had made his debut in the 5th ODI while Australia had already won the series 4-0. In the final ODI, in Sydney, India managed to bundle out Australia for a score fo 330. After an unbeaten 104 by Manish Pandey, India finally managed to win a single game and end the series 4-1.

However, the biggest highlight of the game was Jasprit Bumrah’s pin-point yorkers in the death overs. However, after he did go ahead and bowl them despite Dhoni’s doubts, the captain came up to the debutant ant said that ‘you could’ve won us this series’.
Recalling the conversation during a recent chat with Times of India, Bumrahs said, “Well, it was his decision [Dhoni’s international retirement], and everybody respects it. On a personal level, I made my debut (Sydney, 2016) under him and he gave me a lot of confidence. Not many people know that Mahi Bhai had never seen me a bowl, at any level. In my debut game, I was going to bowl in the death overs and I asked him ‘can I bowl yorkers?’ and he was like ‘no, don’t bowl yorkers’.”
He further elaborated, “He thought since it was a difficult delivery, I wouldn’t be able to pull it off. I told him ‘in death overs, I don’t know what else to do’. So, anyway, I went ahead and did my thing and then he came to me and was like “I didn’t know this at all. You should’ve come earlier, we would’ve won the whole series”. Here was me, making a nervous debut and the captain telling me “you could’ve won us this series”. He gave me a lot of freedom.”
