India’s stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah has made it clear that the team is moving forward with a fresh mindset, leaving behind the disappointment of their 0-3 defeat at home against New Zealand. As India prepares for the opening Test of the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in Perth, Bumrah emphasized that the lessons learned from the New Zealand series won’t weigh them down.
Jasprit Bumrah steps in as captain for this match, filling in for Rohit Sharma, who is on paternity leave following the birth of his son. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Bumrah expressed his excitement about leading the side.
“It’s an honor. I have my own style of leadership, which is different from Virat’s or Rohit’s. I love taking responsibility. I spoke with Rohit before coming here, but it was only after arriving that I got clarity on leading the team,” Jasprit Bumrah said.

Jasprit Bumrah also advocated for more pacers taking up leadership roles in cricket, citing their tactical acumen. “I’ve always believed pacers make excellent captains. Pat Cummins has done a phenomenal job for Australia. Historically, we’ve had great examples like Kapil Dev. I hope this starts a new tradition,” he added.
The five-match Test series begins on Friday, and Bumrah stressed the importance of starting fresh regardless of past results.
“When you win, you start from zero, and when you lose, you also start from zero. We’re not carrying any baggage from the New Zealand series. The conditions there were different, and we’ve historically had better results in Australia,” the skipper explained. Regarding the team composition, Bumrah confirmed that the playing XI has been finalized but remained tight-lipped about the details. “We have decided on our playing XI, and you’ll find out at the toss tomorrow,” he said.
