India’s star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who has been known for his sharp bowling in all three formats of the game, was recently asked that one question which every one of his fans was eager to get to know: who is the toughest batter he has faced so far? True to his form, he replied in a manner that spoke volumes about his focused and competitive mindset. During an appearance at Chennai’s Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Japsrit Bumrah was asked this intriguing question during a fresher’s day event.

Instead of naming one, fast bowler Bumrah gave a rather articulate and tactical response. “I want to give a good answer, but the real reason I won’t name anyone is that I don’t want anyone to dominate me mentally. I respect everyone, but in my mind I tell myself that if I do my job well, there’s no one in the world who can stop me,” Bumrah said.

This response epitomizes the elite mindset that has enabled Bumrah to stay among the very best in his work in the world. Concentrating on his own game rather than stressing out by the strengths of the opponents, Bumrah ensures he keeps control over his game.

“I look at myself rather than the opponent. I think that if I give myself the best opportunity, everything else will take care of itself. I don’t give the power to the batsman by thinking he’s better than me,” he added.

The words of Japsrit Bumrah resonate with the confidence and self-belief that have become his trademark. Like his precise bowling, his mind has also been tuned to clock in at the right time; this has enabled him to shine at the highest level of competition.

Currently, Japsrit Bumrah is taking well-deserved rest for his excellent performances in the T20 World Cup 2024. He had missed India’s white-ball tour to Sri Lanka, and it remains to be seen whether he will appear in the forthcoming home series against Bangladesh. Indian Cricket Board is pretty keen on keeping their ace pacer out of injuries, especially with a busy season ahead.

The biggest challenge coming up for India this year will be their tour of Australia in November as they try to defend the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Before that, India will also play hosts to New Zealand for a three-match series in Tests, which should be an ideal preparation for Bumrah. His performance will be so crucial under Australian conditions, and the games against the Kiwis will give him some nice confidence going into the more important series Down Under.
