Jasprit Bumrah once again showcased his mastery with the red ball, dismantling the West Indies lower order with two lethal yorkers on Day 1 of the first Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The Indian pace spearhead sent Justin Greaves and young debutant Johann Layne packing in quick succession, putting India firmly in control of the two-match series opener.

Bumrah’s first strike came in the 39th over when Justin Greaves, who had looked solid with a fighting 32 off 48 balls, fell prey to a trademark yorker. The ball tailed in late and sneaked under the bat, shattering the off-stump and leaving Greaves helpless. Just two overs later, Bumrah repeated the magic against debutant Johann Layne.
Delivering another pinpoint yorker aimed at the base of the stumps, he left the youngster with no answers. Layne’s bat came down late, and the ball thundered into off and middle, ending his stay for just a single run. With that, Jasprit Bumrah had nearly wrapped up the innings, before Kuldeep Yadav applied the finishing touches.

The wrist-spinner dismissed Jomel Warrican for 8 with a clever piece of bowling. Warrican, attempting an adventurous reverse sweep first ball, misjudged the flight. The ball brushed his glove and carried to wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel, who pulled off a sharp low catch to bring the West Indies innings to a close at just 162 in 44.1 overs.

The collapse was dramatic and historic—it became the second-fastest first-innings dismissal by a touring side in India. Only Bangladesh’s 30.3-over surrender in the 2019 Eden Gardens day-night Test was quicker. For the West Indies, it was yet another reminder of their long-standing struggles in Indian conditions. In their last ten innings in India, they have managed to survive the new-ball threat only once, often losing early wickets to India’s pace duo.

Mohammed Siraj was the standout with figures of 4/40 from 14 overs, his relentless accuracy setting the tone in the morning. Bumrah complemented him brilliantly, finishing with three wickets and reaching a personal milestone—50 Test wickets on Indian soil. Impressively, he became the fastest bowler to the mark in India, achieving the feat in just 1,747 deliveries. Kuldeep Yadav chipped in with two wickets, underlining India’s all-round dominance.
Meanwhile, skipper Shubman Gill emphasized the importance of consistency. Ahead of the series, he had stressed that India’s goal is to win all four remaining Tests this year. “It’s about switching into the red-ball mindset and sticking to our plans,” Gill remarked, reflecting the team’s hunger to dominate across formats.
