International Cricket Council Chairman Jay Shah has been named to the newly formed Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) Global Advisory Board, which replaces the MCC World Cricket Committee that has been in existence since 2006. The advisory board, which former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara chairs, will consist of cricket influencers from around the world who will work to help the sport grow and evolve.

The now-defunct MCC World Cricket Committee has played an important role in shaping modern cricket. The committee recommended major changes like the Decision Review System, day-night Test matches, and the World Test Championship. Yet, they had no official powers, still highly influential in the manner through which the game developed.

In 2024, the MCC organized the first World Cricket Connects forum at Lord’s, where over 120 key figures in cricket gathered to plan the future of the sport, inspiring the formation of the Global Advisory Board as a more structured body that facilitates meaningful debate with actionable outcomes.

The advisory board will have 13 founding members, including Sourav Ganguly, Graeme Smith, Heather Knight, and Andrew Strauss. They will also take the input to shape the agenda of the annual World Cricket Connects forum to address the most pressing challenges cricket is currently facing globally.

“MCC’s Global Advisory Board represents a significant step forward. We’ve assembled some of the best minds in cricket from various domains, and I’m excited about what we can achieve collectively for the benefit of the game,” said MCC Chair Mark Nicholas, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Jay Shah, the youngest ICC Chairman, has extensive experience on the board. As a former BCCI secretary, he has made significant progress in promoting cricket worldwide and is recognized as one of the sport’s most influential personalities.

The board is set to hold its inaugural meeting at the second World Cricket Connects forum, taking place at Lord’s on June 7-8, 2025. Scheduled right before the ICC World Test Championship final, this event will explore the opportunities and challenges facing cricket as it prepares for the future, thereby strengthening the advisory board’s influence in guiding the sport’s evolution.
