As the Indian women’s team prepares for their T20 World Cup 2024 opener against New Zealand, the squad is driven by the ambition to follow in the footsteps of Rohit Sharma’s team and etch their names into Indian cricket history. Jemimah Rodrigues, one of India’s key batters, recently shared the emotional impact of witnessing the men’s team clinch their World Cup title in Barbados. Recalling the moment, Jemimah spoke about the collective excitement that rippled through the women’s camp as they watched the final against South Africa.

“I remember watching the men’s final. We were in the middle of a Test match against South Africa, and on Day 3, we stayed up until 12 or 1:30 at night watching the game. That moment is etched in my mind. We’ve always dreamt of winning a World Cup, but seeing them win just before our tournament made it all feel so real,” Jemimah Rodrigues told Star Sports.

For the women’s team, the men’s victory sparked a fresh wave of motivation. Jemimah Rodrigues recalled the moment when their usually lively camp fell silent, as the weight of the men’s achievement sunk in.

“Seeing Rohit Sharma lift the trophy ignited a desire in all of us. We’re normally a talkative group, especially me, but when that moment happened, we were all silent. It was like we were all dreaming of our own World Cup moment,” she added.

The triumph of the men’s team has fueled the women’s squad’s determination to bring home the trophy for women’s cricket. However, for now, Jemimah emphasized the importance of staying focused on the present.

“I could see everyone thinking, ‘When will our time come? How would it feel to see Harry Di [Harmanpreet Kaur] lift the trophy with us beside her?’ But honestly, we’re focusing on the process rather than the result. We’ll leave the outcome to God,” Jemimah Rodrigues said.
