With the Indian Premier League 2025 now officially suspended for a week amid rising military tensions between India and Pakistan, its official broadcaster JioStar has released a heartfelt statement aligning itself with national interests above all commercial considerations. The company said it wholeheartedly supports the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision to pause the tournament, and affirmed its commitment to working with the board to resume IPL action only when the timing is appropriate.

“At this time, we must stand united with our country, support the government and our armed forces, and extend solidarity to civilians affected,” the statement read. JioStar further added that it would work in close coordination with BCCI and all stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition and the safe return of all individuals involved in the IPL’s broadcasting operations.

Rediffusion Chairman Sandeep Goyal also weighed in on the situation, applauding the call to suspend IPL 2025. “National interest comes first—it’s not just about security, but also about the tone,” he said. “While our soldiers are risking their lives on the frontlines, a cricket stadium full of fans cheering for boundaries doesn’t sit well with the national mood. It’s a time to close ranks and show unity.”

Goyal also noted that broadcasters are likely covered under force majeure clauses, which may cushion financial losses. “For now, brands will gravitate more toward news channels. Most advertisers will adopt a wait-and-watch approach,” he added.

From a financial lens, Nuvama Institutional Equities Executive Director Abneesh Roy offered a pragmatic take. “Since most of the tournament has already been played and only a few matches remain, we don’t expect a significant commercial impact. It’s more of a sentiment dip for stocks like SUN TV and United Spirits, who own Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore, respectively.”

The uncertainty around IPL’s future was brewing ever since Thursday’s match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala was abruptly halted due to air raid sirens in nearby regions. As national security concerns escalate, cricket—India’s most beloved sport—has temporarily stepped aside, reinforcing the sentiment that in times of national crisis, nothing comes before the country.
