Joe Root, England’s star batsman, endured an embarrassing moment during the team’s World Cup 2023 match against Netherlands when his attempt to play the ramp shot went disastrously wrong. Root’s dismissal, which resulted from being nutmegged by a delivery from Logan van Beek, added to his disappointing run of form in the tournament.

Joe Root witnessed a bizarre dismissal

Root’s performance in the World Cup 2023 campaign has been far from his usual standards. Despite starting the tournament with promising knocks of 77 and 82 against New Zealand and Bangladesh, his form plummeted in the ensuing matches. In his last four innings, he managed to score just 16 runs, with individual scores of 11, 3, 2, and 0. This poor run of form played a significant role in England’s struggles in the tournament.

Root’s indifferent form was highlighted by former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir, who stated that it had cost England dearly in the World Cup. His poor form was particularly evident when he bagged a golden duck in a match against India at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on October 30, 2023.

This was a stark contrast to Root’s performance in the 2019 World Cup, where he was England’s leading run-scorer with 556 runs at an average of 61.77, including two centuries and three half-centuries.

His poor run continued in the game against Netherlands as he was dismissed in comical fashion during the match, while attempting to play his trademark ramp shot. The England batter had executed the shot flawlessly in the 14th over when he hit Van Meekeren for a boundary.

However, the second attempt went horribly wrong and saw Root get nutmegged and bowled by Van Beek, much to the dismay of the England fans.
