Jofra Archer once again underlined his value as the Rajasthan Royals’ pace spearhead with a dream start against the Kolkata Knight Riders in their IPL 2026 clash at Eden Gardens on April 19. Opening the bowling, Archer struck on the very first delivery of the innings, clean bowling Tim Seifert for a golden duck and immediately putting KKR under pressure.

The early breakthrough was not just impactful in the context of the match but also significant historically. With that dismissal, Archer equalled Mohammed Shami’s record for the most wickets taken on the first ball of an IPL innings. Both pacers now have five such scalps, highlighting their ability to strike instantly and disrupt opposition plans right from ball one.

Archer’s consistency in this phase has been remarkable. In fact, this was the third consecutive match where he picked up a wicket on the opening delivery, having previously dismissed Phil Salt against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Abhishek Sharma against Sunrisers Hyderabad in similar fashion. It’s a rare skill that combines precision, pace, and the ability to catch batters off guard early.

What makes Archer’s feat even more impressive is the efficiency with which he has achieved it. While Shami reached the milestone across more than 120 IPL matches, Archer has matched the record in just his 50-plus appearances in the league, underlining his impact as a strike bowler.

The wicket of Seifert, who came into the playing XI as a replacement for Finn Allen, also added to Archer’s growing legacy with Rajasthan Royals. The England quick has now taken 65 wickets for the franchise, moving into joint-second place among their all-time leading wicket-takers in the IPL.

With just a couple more wickets, Archer is on the verge of overtaking Yuzvendra Chahal to become Rajasthan Royals’ highest wicket-taker in IPL history. Given his current form and rhythm, that milestone could arrive sooner rather than later.

As Rajasthan Royals continue their strong campaign this season, Archer’s ability to deliver early breakthroughs remains a key factor, giving his side the perfect platform to control games from the outset.
