The iconic Wankhede Stadium once again lived up to its reputation as a theatre of unforgettable cricketing moments, as Shreyas Iyer produced a stunning piece of fielding brilliance during the IPL 2026 clash between the Mumbai Indians and the Punjab Kings. In a match packed with intensity, it was Iyer’s athleticism that stole the spotlight and earned widespread admiration across the cricketing world.

Among those left in awe was none other than Jonty Rhodes, widely regarded as one of the greatest fielders in the history of the sport. Taking to social media, Rhodes praised Iyer’s extraordinary effort and reflected on how dramatically fielding standards have evolved in modern cricket.

“Watching Shreyas Iyer perform that acrobatic fielding to assist in taking the ‘team catch’ made me appreciate how fielding has evolved since my retirement,” Jonty Rhodes wrote. He even added a touch of humour, suggesting that while he was once known as the “father of fielding,” today’s players make him feel like the “grandfather of fielding.”

The defining moment came during Hardik Pandya’s dismissal. The MI skipper looked set to clear the boundary with a powerful strike, only for Iyer to intervene with exceptional awareness and timing. Sprinting along the boundary, he leapt into the air, stretched back while losing balance, and flicked the ball back into play mid-air. The relay effort was completed by a teammate, turning a certain six into a crucial wicket.

The reaction inside the MI camp said it all. Players like Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav were visibly stunned, their expressions capturing the sheer brilliance of the moment.

This level of fielding has become a hallmark of Punjab Kings’ campaign this season. Under Iyer’s leadership, the side has combined skill, energy, and sharp execution to remain unbeaten so far. With four wins and a draw, they sit comfortably at the top of the IPL 2026 standings.

As PBKS prepare for their upcoming clash against the Lucknow Super Giants, their confidence continues to soar. If moments like Iyer’s are anything to go by, Punjab are not just winning matches—they are redefining standards on the field.
