South African cricket legend Jonty Rhodes has offered a clear perspective on the ongoing debate surrounding Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s future with the Indian cricket team. With both veterans now in the latter stages of their international careers, questions have repeatedly been raised about whether age should influence decisions over their place in the side. Rohit Sharma is 39, while Virat Kohli is 37, and a growing pool of talented youngsters is waiting for opportunities at the international level.

However, Rhodes believes age alone should not determine when an experienced player is replaced. Instead, he feels performance and the value a senior cricketer brings to the dressing room should remain central to selection decisions. Speaking to RevSportz, Jonty Rhodes pointed to the remarkable depth of Indian cricket as one of the biggest challenges facing the selectors. The Indian Premier League, along with several state-level and domestic T20 competitions, continues to produce young players capable of competing for national selection.

That abundance of talent, according to Rhodes, has created a difficult situation for the selectors. Every time a youngster is brought into the squad, another established player could potentially lose his place. Senior stars such as Rohit and Kohli can therefore become easy targets because of their age.

However, Jonty Rhodes believes the experience of established players cannot be replicated immediately by younger cricketers. Years of international cricket provide senior players with knowledge of different conditions, pressure situations and match scenarios, all of which can benefit a team.“The success of the IPL has been a double-edged sword that brings in so many young players.”

Rhodes argued that the huge number of emerging talents can create the impression that older players should make way simply to provide opportunities to the next generation. But he believes that approach could overlook the importance of experience.

For the former South Africa international, performance should remain the most important factor when assessing an established player’s future. “I am all in favour of performance being the deciding factor.”

Jonty Rhodes added that scoring runs is only one part of what experienced players contribute. Their knowledge and understanding of the game can also provide significant value to a team, particularly when younger players are still developing their own methods. He ultimately suggested that the answer should be straightforward if senior players continue to perform and maintain themselves physically.

The debate surrounding Rohit’s future intensified during India’s previous ODI against England at Lord’s, when speculation emerged that it could be his final appearance for the national team. Rohit, however, responded in emphatic fashion, scoring a memorable century at the iconic venue instead of announcing his retirement. For Rhodes, performances like that reinforce the argument that age should not automatically decide the future of India’s senior stars.
