England wicketkeeper-batter Jordan Cox has opened up about his close bond with Virat Kohli, revealing that the former India captain offered him valuable advice before his Test debut against New Zealand. Cox, who was part of Royal Challengers Bengaluru alongside Kohli during the IPL, said the Indian batting great encouraged him to enjoy the occasion rather than become overwhelmed by the pressure of making his Test debut.

The two cricketers met in London before Cox made his international debut in the second Test of England’s series against New Zealand at The Oval in June. “I probably don’t want to share all of them, but I just wanted to ask him a few questions. He was saying: ‘Enjoy the moment. You only get one debut. Just enjoy it and have fun,’” Jordan Cox told BBC Sport.

Kohli also reminded Cox about the sacrifices made by his family and friends throughout his journey. The 25-year-old recalled how the former India captain encouraged him to appreciate the support of those who had helped him reach the international stage.

Cox joined RCB for the first time this year as the franchise looked to defend its IPL title. Although he did not feature in a match, the young Englishman spent considerable time around Kohli and developed a strong personal relationship with him.

That connection has remained important to Cox, who admitted that Kohli is someone he can turn to for advice beyond cricket. The England batter said he would not hesitate to contact the Indian star if he was struggling or needed some guidance.

“I will keep it forever, I think. He is someone that I have looked up to and I have managed to spend what felt like four months with him in India. He is someone that I will text if I am ever feeling down or need a bit of help,” Jordan Cox said.

Jordan Cox showed glimpses of his potential on Test debut, scoring 27 and 25 while batting at No. 7, although England eventually lost the match.

With England now preparing to face Pakistan at Headingley, Cox is set for another opportunity at No. 3 after Jacob Bethell was ruled out through injury. The young batter will hope to build on the confidence gained from his debut and put Kohli’s advice into practice on the international stage.
