Just days before the much-awaited first Ashes Test between Australia and England at Perth Stadium, the hosts have been dealt a harsh blow as star pacer Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out due to a hamstring strain. This setback arrives at a critical moment for Australia, which is already facing concerns over the fitness of key bowlers.

Hazlewood sustained the injury during New South Wales’ Sheffield Shield clash against Victoria at the Sydney Cricket Ground earlier this week. While initial scans offered a glimmer of hope by showing no damage, follow-up imaging revealed an actual strain.

Cricket Australia confirmed the news, stating, “Early imaging can occasionally underestimate low-grade muscle injuries. As a result, Hazlewood will not travel to Perth and has been ruled out.” The team management will now have to reassess their strategy in the absence of one of their most experienced seamers.

To add depth to their fast-bowling stocks, Michael Neser has been drafted into the squad. Neser, who made his Test debut against England in Adelaide in 2021, joins as cover not just for Hazlewood but also for Sean Abbott, who suffered a similar hamstring problem in the same match. Yet, the most worrying aspect for Australia remains the unavailability of captain Pat Cummins, who is recovering from a back issue.

With left-arm speedster Mitchell Starc the only fully fit frontline quick, the injury woes could push Australia to consider a more all-rounder-focused attack. Fast-bowling talents Cameron Green and Beau Webster might play a more significant role, while uncapped pacer Brendan Doggett is also in contention for a surprise debut. Doggett, who has impressed with two five-wicket hauls for South Australia post-injury, could be a wildcard selection at the fast-paced Perth track.
