Former Australia cricketer and head coach Justin Langer has recently reaffirmed his belief that Virat Kohli remains the best batter in world cricket, despite the Indian maestro’s recent dip in form. Kohli, who dazzled with a century in Perth during the first Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, has since struggled to replicate that success. His modest score of 36 in the first innings of the fourth Test has only added to the scrutiny surrounding his performances.
However, Langer, while on commentary duties, came to Kohli’s defence with unwavering support. Responding to fellow commentator Mark Waugh’s question about why he ranked Kohli above legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara, Langer passionately explained his reasoning.

“You asked me, Mark, why I said yesterday that Virat Kohli is the best player I have ever seen. There were a few raised eyebrows, but he actually is. We talk about Sachin—what a player he was. It was one of the privileges of my life to play against Tendulkar and, of course, with Ricky Ponting and Brian Lara. If I had my last rupee or my last dollar, I would pay to watch Brian Lara bat. But if I had my life and my last dollar together, I would have Virat Kohli batting for me,” Justin Langer remarked during the broadcast.
Langer further elaborated on his stance, emphasizing Kohli’s complete cricketing package. Beyond his array of dazzling shots, Langer highlighted Kohli’s athleticism, leadership, and mental toughness as qualities that set him apart.

“It’s not just the cover drives or hook shots. It’s the way he watches the ball, his running between the wickets, his fielding, and his gladiatorial style of leadership,” Justin Langer concluded, underlining Kohli’s enduring value as a cricketer.
Even amid criticism, Kohli’s ability to command respect from cricketing stalwarts like Langer demonstrates his extraordinary impact on the sport.
