Habibul Bashar, the then Bangladeshi captain, had won the toss and chose to field. India were handed a blow in the first over itself in the form of Sourav Ganguly (0). Kaif was the highest run-scorer for India, scoring 80 (111), with the help of seven fours.

Chasing 246 runs from 50 overs, Bangladesh ended up scoring 234-8 in 50 overs. With bowling figures of 9-0-43-3, S Sriram was the pick of the bowlers for India.
