Kane Williamson and three other New Zealand players on Friday travel to the Maldives as they were not feeling safe staying in Delhi amid the crunch time of COVID-19. However, this was not their original plan though. Notably, Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Williamson, Chennai Super King’s Mitchell Santer and Royal Challenger Bangalore’s Kyle Jamison along with CSK physio Tommy Simsek took a commercial flight to the Maldives.
However, the four were supposed to stay in Delhi in a bio-bubble until May 10 and then they would take a flight to the UK before the Test series in England and World Test Championship final against India which will start from June 18.
“Kane and few others from New Zealand were not feeling safe in Delhi because of the COVID situation there. That is why they decided to fly to Maldives,” a Sunrisers Hyderabad official told PTI.

On the other hand, pace spearhead Trent Boult has flown back to New Zealand with the other member who was part of IPL and will join the team in the UK after spending time with his family as well. However, despite having a travel ban from India, New Zealand has allowed its citizens to come back home with a mandatory quarantine period of two weeks as well.
Meanwhile, the Australian players are also in the Maldives after the suspension of the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the Australian government has imposed a ban on all travellers from India until May 15 as the country has been fighting against the deadly second wave of the COVID-19.

The IPL was suspended on Tuesday after several players got affected by the COVID-19 in the bio-bubble. It started with Kolkata Knight Riders’ Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep warrior and later Chennai Super Kings’ bowling coach L Balaji, SunRisers Hyderabad’s Wriddhiman Saha and Delhi Capitals’ Amit Mishra too joined in the infected players’ list which led the board to take the decision to call it off now.
