New Zealand cricket legend Kane Williamson captured the internet’s attention with a heartwarming moment shared with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) owner Kavya Maran. This touching scene unfolded at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium stands on Thursday after the IPL 2024 match between SRH and Gujarat Titans (GT) was washed out without a single ball being bowled.
Despite the disappointing rainout, Williamson, who has only featured in two games for GT this season, took the time to connect with his former teammates from SRH. As he was shaking hands with the SRH players following the official announcement of the match’s abandonment, Kavya Maran called out to him. Overjoyed at seeing her, Williamson approached with a broad smile and they shared a warm hug. “So good to see you,” Kane Williamson exclaimed, radiating genuine happiness.
Kavya Maran, equally pleased, responded with a big smile and asked, “All good?” This brief yet affectionate exchange highlighted the strong bond between Williamson and the SRH family, a relationship built over seven seasons from 2015 to 2022.

During his tenure with SRH, Williamson not only played a pivotal role but also captained the team in 2018 when David Warner was banned, and again served as their full-time skipper in 2022 before being released. With 2,102 runs in 76 matches, he remains SRH’s third-highest run-scorer, following David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan.

This season, SRH has secured a place in the playoffs, becoming the third team to do so, following the Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals, who currently hold the top two spots in the standings. SRH’s tally now stands at 15 points with one match remaining against the already eliminated Punjab Kings on May 19.
On the other hand, Gujarat Titans, last year’s runners-up and the 2022 champions, saw their playoff hopes dashed. Their previous match was also abandoned due to rain, leaving them with 12 points from 14 matches and ending their season prematurely.

The match between SRH and GT faced significant delays due to persistent rain. The toss, scheduled for 7 PM, was postponed as the rain and wet outfield conditions continued to worsen. With a steady downpour throughout the evening, the covers remained in place. The cut-off time for a five-over match was set at 10:56 PM, requiring the rain to stop by 10:15 PM for the ground staff to begin their work. Unfortunately, as the rain showed no signs of letting up, the officials had no choice but to call off the match, leaving fans and players alike disappointed.
