Veteran New Zealand batter Kane Williamson etched his name in history as the first Black Caps player to cross the 9,000-run mark in Test cricket. He achieved this milestone on Day 3 of the first Test against England at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. With this feat, Williamson joined an elite group, becoming the third joint-fastest player to reach the landmark.
Australia’s Steve Smith remains the quickest to achieve this milestone, reaching it in just 99 matches, followed by the iconic West Indian, Brian Lara, who did so in 101 Tests. Williamson shares the third spot with Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara and Pakistan’s Younis Khan, all reaching the milestone in 103 matches.
Williamson showcased his trademark class throughout the Christchurch Test. In New Zealand’s first innings, he crafted a patient 93 off 197 deliveries, falling just short of a century. His innings were pivotal in guiding the Black Caps to a competitive total of 348 runs. Despite his valiant effort, England dominated with the bat, posting a commanding 499 runs in their first innings.
