At first, Australia beat them at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2015 after they had finally reached the final after losing six semis. And then, they lost to England in 2019 at Lord’s on the back of boundary counts as both the teams finished on similar scores in both 50 overs and the subsequent super over as well.

However, on Wednesday New Zealand finally registered a win in a global final with Kane Williamson unbeaten on 52 and Ross Taylor at 47 as well.

“It’s certainly a slightly different feeling being on the right side of the result,” Kane Williamson told a news conference. “The first semi-final was one-sided, the second one was pretty interesting. It was the first official world test championship, that’s a really good feeling. Both teams knew coming into the last day there were three possible results — win, lose or draw and we saw that things could happen quickly.”

However, both Williamson and Ross Taylor stitched an unbeaten winning partnership of 96 after the quick successions of their openers – Tom Latham and Devon Conway to the veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Even, the credit goes to their young pace bowler Kyle Jamieson too who picked up five for 31 in India’s first innings and then two for 30 in the second as well and restricted India within a moderate total.

Notably, Kane Williamson led New Zealand have started the inaugural WTC Final as favourites after their recent two-match Test series win against England by 1-0  as well. On the other hand, Team India had last took part in the longer format against England at home earlier this year only. However, India will play a five-match Test series next against England in August.
