Renowned Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev has showered accolades upon emerging pacer Mohammed Siraj, offering valuable advice to enhance his performance. Siraj has exhibited remarkable improvement in both Test and ODI formats, notably leading India’s pace attack in the absence of Bumrah and Shami. Kapil, while commending Siraj’s potential, cautioned against over-reliance on short-pitch deliveries, highlighting his approach in the World Test Championship Final.
Kapil Dev shared, “I think he has got great potential.” However, he pointed out, “But I also feel he gets carried away with short-pitch deliveries. Yes, it is an important weapon for a fast bowler. When I saw India playing the WTC final, Siraj was bowling too many short-pitch deliveries whereas the Australian bowlers were pitching it up,” as conveyed to Times of India.
Kapil Dev emphasized that while Siraj possesses wicket-taking ability, refining execution is crucial for consistency. He elaborated, “Siraj has so much ability. But he has to analyze and see how many short-pitch deliveries fetch him wickets. He has the wicket-taking ability, but he has to execute his plans better.”
Kapil Dev also addressed the participation of senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in domestic matches. He underscored the importance of domestic cricket as a nurturing ground for the next generation of players, stating, “Domestic cricket is most important. How many domestic matches has Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma or any of the other top players played in recent times? I think the top players must play a decent amount of domestic matches so that it helps the next generation of players.”
Discussing the performance of Sanju Samson in the India-West Indies tour, Kapil Dev offered insights on the talented player. He remarked, “It’s not right to talk about Sanju Samson alone. We are talking about the Indian team. I think he is a great player and a wonderful talent. But he has to apply himself more.”
Kapil Dev’s words not only recognize Siraj’s potential but also underscore the significance of balanced strategies and a robust domestic cricket foundation in shaping India’s cricketing future.
