Former Indian captain Kapil Dev has sent a much-needed morale boost through a video message to his one-time fellow cricketer, Anshuman Gaekwad, who is in the process of battling cancer. The message came forth after Kapil played the role of a catalyst in compelling the BCCI to extend financial aid for the ailing Gaekwad’s treatment.

In the video shared by him, Vijay Lokapally, senior journalist, Kapil offers words of strength and fond memories to his old friend.

“Hi Anshu, I know you’re going through a tough time,” began Kapil, “that’s life. We’ve all faced challenges. I remember the good times – the first time I played under your captaincy, and when you smashed a double century against Pakistan in Jalandhar while I was captain. Those were great memories.”

Kapil accepts the principle of impermanence of life but focuses on the fighting spirit. “Trying times come and go, Anshu,” he says, “but I know you are a fighter. So come on, cheer up, and live life to the fullest. Wishing you the best of life as you take rest and get better.”.

“Everyone has to go one day, but that’s the best part of being a human: fight the way you did on the cricket field. Whatever it might have in store for you in the future, I hope it’s an early meet. We celebrate just the way we used to. And now, get all well, Anshu. Whatever has passed, has passed for all reasons, known or unknown to us. You are an amazing person, and I have so many stories to share. But first things first; get well soon. Have coffee together, perhaps even drink! Take care. The entire cricket world loves you, and we adore your fighting spirit. Don’t you dare let us down, Anshu. Take care, love.”
