Kapil Dev, India’s first World Cup-winning captain, has reignited a long-running debate by stressing that playing for the country will always hold greater value than turning out in the Indian Premier League. Speaking at an event in New Delhi, the legendary all-rounder admitted that while everyone appreciates financial rewards, some players place money above the pride of national representation—a trend he believes is increasingly visible in modern cricket.

Over the past few years, the rise of global T20 leagues has given players lucrative alternatives, prompting several international stars to prioritise franchise cricket. Kapil Dev, however, believes that priorities vary from person to person, even if national service should ideally come first.
“Everybody loves money, but some players feel it is essential. I still feel playing for India is more important than playing IPL,” he said, adding that each cricketer operates with a unique mindset.

When asked about his preferred format, Kapil smiled and made it clear that his love for the sport cuts across all versions. Whether it’s a two-ball contest, a 10-over shootout, or a full-fledged Test match, he enjoys cricket in every form. “Cricket is cricket… just like golf is golf,” he quipped.

The conversation drifted to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, and Kapil couldn’t resist a playful comment: “Good luck, they should play golf also,” he joked, drawing laughter from the audience.

Kapil was speaking at the launch of ‘72 The League’, a new city-based golf event announced by the PGTI and scheduled for next year. He emphasised the need for India to produce golfers who can win major global titles, insisting that a breakthrough on the world stage—be it in Europe, the US, or even the Olympics—could transform the sport’s popularity across the country.
