Former cricketers Graeme Smith and Kevin Pietersen were seen engaging in funny banter as Punjab Kings (PBKS) locked horns with Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 match on May 3, 2022, at the DY Patil Stadium. GT skipper, Hardik Pandya chose to bat first after winning the toss and they only managed to post a total of 143/8 on the board with Sai Sudharsan making 65* in 50 balls with 5 fours and 1 six.

The incident happened in the 14th over, when the official broadcasters decided to show the greatest number of six hitters in the ongoing IPL 2022 and Kevin Pietersen and Graeme Smith were on-air alongside Murali Kartik. Pietersen was counting down the batters with Jos Buttler hitting 36 sixes in 10 innings, Andre Russell with 22 maximums in 8 innings, and Liam Livingstone who was shone to have 20 sixes in 10 innings in IPL 2022.

As Kevin Pietersen ended reading the stats, he said “Liam Livingstone might not have hit many, but he has hit the biggest (Six of the tournament)” and then asked Graeme Smith “Have you ever hit a six in your career, Mr. Smith?” Then the camera cut to the comm box, where Pietersen can be seen laughing with Murali Kartik over his comment.

However, Graeme Smith looked uninterested in the banter and said that he has no intention of wasting his time on Pietersen’s rubbish, before taking a pause and coming up with a shut-downer of his own. Smith, who won the IPL in 2008 with Rajasthan Royals, then burned Pietersen by asking “I need to waste my time with your rubbish….Did you ever win an IPL“. Though Pietersen played in the IPL from 2008- 2016, he never managed to feature in a squad that won the IPL title.
