In a memorable off-field moment during India’s tour of England, both the Indian men’s and women’s cricket teams were granted a royal audience with King Charles III. The meet-and-greet took place amidst their ongoing cricketing commitments, creating a unique cultural moment that transcended the sport itself.

BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla shared intimate details of the interaction and praised King Charles for his gracious demeanour and surprising familiarity with the Indian players. What stood out most was the monarch’s empathy and attentiveness, particularly his emotional conversation with Indian pacer Akash Deep.
King Charles personally asked about Akash’s sister, Akhand Jyoti Singh, who is currently battling stage three cancer. The monarch’s awareness of such personal details left a lasting impression. “He had found out so many details,” Rajeev Shukla told ANI. “He asked about Akash Deep’s sister’s illness. It didn’t feel like we were talking to the King of England—there was so much humility in him.”

Akash Deep, who had heroically led India’s bowling attack at Edgbaston, had earlier dedicated the win to his ailing sister. After taking ten wickets in the match, he emotionally shared his dedication during the post-match broadcast. His sister later confirmed to Aaj Tak that she had asked him to stay focused on the series and not worry about her condition. “Whenever he takes a wicket, we cheer so loudly, the neighbours ask what’s happened,” she said, beaming with pride.

King Charles also made it a point to console Mohammed Siraj, who was visibly emotional after India’s narrow 22-run loss in the third Test at Lord’s. Siraj, who was the last man out during the tense run chase, broke down after the defeat. Charles reportedly told him that the result was unfortunate and appreciated the team’s spirit.
Rajeev Shukla remarked that Charles acknowledged India’s bold move to field a relatively young and fresh team, which nearly pulled off historic wins at both Edgbaston and Lord’s. “He said it was unfortunate, but he could see the fighting spirit in this team,” Shukla added.

With the series now standing at 2-1 in England’s favour and two Tests still to play, India have ample time to regroup ahead of the fourth Test in Manchester starting July 23. The team, already drawing praise for its grit, now carries the added motivation of personal stories, family strength, and royal encouragement.
