India head coach Gautam Gambhir could make a return to the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2028, with four franchises reportedly interested in securing his services. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are among the teams that have approached the former India opener, while two other franchises are also believed to be exploring the possibility of adding him to their coaching staff. According to a report by Abhishek Tripathi of Dainik Jagran, the four franchises are considering Gambhir for either a mentor or head coach role ahead of the IPL 2028 season.

Some teams are also planning changes to their existing coaching structures as they prepare for the next cycle. Gautam Gambhir has an impressive record as an IPL mentor, having previously worked with KKR and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). His success with both franchises has made him an attractive candidate for teams looking to strengthen their backroom staff.
KKR and Rajasthan Royals are the two franchises specifically mentioned in the report. Gambhir shares a special connection with Kolkata, having captained the franchise to IPL titles in 2012 and 2014. He returned as a mentor in 2024, and KKR went on to win their third IPL championship that season, ending a decade-long wait for the trophy.

Before rejoining KKR, Gambhir served as LSG’s mentor in 2022 and 2023. The franchise reached the playoffs in both seasons, further strengthening his reputation as a successful team strategist.

The report has not identified the other two interested franchises. However, one is described as a former IPL champion, while the other is yet to win its maiden title. This has triggered speculation about possible interest from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) or Mumbai Indians (MI). Delhi Capitals (DC), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and LSG are also being discussed as potential candidates for the remaining spot. However, none of these links has been officially confirmed.

Gambhir’s potential IPL return will largely depend on his availability after completing his current assignment with the Indian cricket team. His contract as head coach is scheduled to run until the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
If he becomes available, the 2028 IPL season could mark another chapter in Gambhir’s coaching career.
