Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have voiced their frustration over the IPL’s decision to extend the cut-off time by 120 minutes for the remainder of the 2025 season to counter rain disruptions. With the monsoon arriving early and a week-long suspension mid-season due to the India-Pakistan conflict, the IPL governing council introduced this change to maximise the completion of games. However, KKR believe the timing of the rule change has been unfair.

KKR CEO Venky Mysore, in an email quoted by ESPNcricinfo, expressed disappointment that the extended time window wasn’t in place when the season resumed on May 17. On that day, KKR faced Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in a crucial fixture, but the match was washed out without a toss. The no-result ended KKR’s slim hopes of qualifying for the playoffs.

Mysore argued that had the extended time allowance been implemented earlier, even a five-over match could have been staged. The rain delayed the toss, and the match was eventually called off at 10:30 PM IST—just 26 minutes before the original cut-off. With the updated rule, an additional two hours would have allowed more time to complete the game.

“While these mid-season changes may be necessary, the inconsistent application is disappointing,” Vnky Mysore wrote. “The weather forecasts for May 17 were widely known, and had the 120-minute extension been applied from the restart, we might have had a chance.”

He added that such ad hoc decisions undermine the credibility of a league as prominent as the IPL. “The washout sealed our playoff exit. These inconsistencies don’t reflect well on the league. I hope you understand our disappointment,” Mysore concluded.
KKR’s concerns now add to the growing debate around fairness, rain rules, and decision-making transparency in the IPL.
